Beth Reeves top Raider softball player of the 90s!

The 1990s were not especially kind to Ocean City High School softball. Raider teams had eight straight
losing seasons after starting the decade with two winners.
But, within those teams – even those with losing records – there were some pretty good players.
The best of the bunch was pitcher Beth Reeves, the 1990s Player of the Year. Reeves was All-South
Jersey, won 45 games and, as a senior, had a 1.96 earned run average with 78 strikeouts and just nine
walks in 100 innings.
Reeves is joined on the pitching staff by Jackie Lawinski, who started for two seasons. And Julie Allen,
who started for three seasons, will handle the duties behind the plate.
The infield is solid. First baseman Tricia Shelton set a school record by hitting .502 as a senior. Second
baseman Amy Domeracki started four straight years. Shortstop Stephanie McGuirl broke Shelton’s school
mark by hitting .545 in 1994. And third baseman Pam Schneider was an All-Cape-Atlantic league selection.
In the outfield, the all-90s lineup boasts Jen Blizzard, who hit .350 as a senior; Sue Bloomstead, a solid
hitter with a strong arm. And Jen Frank, an All-CAL selection who was in the varsity lineup for four years.
Rounding out the team are two current OCHS softball players – Jackie Haynes, an All-CAL selection last
year, as the designated hitter. And Cory Picketts, who missed her junior year with an injury, but led the
team in hitting the two previous seasons, as the utility player.
The Raiders were coached by three different people during the 1990s. Gina Zappariello, who won a state
title in 1989, coached in 1990. Roland Watson, who coached eight seasons during the 1980s, then
returned for three years. And John Bruno has coached the last six.
