Cory Picketts was top Raider softball player in First Decade!

Softball has been struggling at Ocean City High School. The Raiders have not had a winning season since 1991. And the tough schedule in the Cape-Atlantic League makes the challenge even greater. But some good athletes wore the red and white during the First Decade (2000-09).

The best of the bunch was Cory Picketts, who holds school records for career hits, home runs and batting average. She was also a smooth fielder and a smart, aggressive leader on the field. Now married, Princeton graduate Cory Terry has returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach in both softball and field hockey.

But there were some other strong infielders during the 10 seasons, including the Treen sisters. Kim and Julie Treen combined to lead the Raiders in hitting for six consecutive seasons. And the first baseman - Jackie Haynes - hit over .450 early in the decade. The catcher is four-year starter Nikki Hinsley.

The outfield trio is Lauren Lythgoe, one of three Raiders to be named all-conference during the decade; Natalie Chamberlain, the team's leading hitter in 2007, who was also a solid infielder; and Morgan Bogushefsky, a three-year starter and the leading hitter last season.

The three pitchers pretty much covered the entire decade. Colleen DeFoney pitched during the first four years, Lauren Smith arrived in the middle years and Gina Favinger finished up the decade.

The designated hitter is Shannon O'Neill, a 2009 graduate who hit .340.

There was a lot of talent during the decade from 2000-09 but it was pretty much spread out. Cory Picketts was the best. She joins Beth Reeves (90s), Cindy Rau (80s) and Wendy Burman (70s) - all pitchers - as Ocean City High School Softball Players of the Decade.
