Another great fall for OCHS sports

By TOM WILLIAMS (12/10/16)

Ocean City HIgh School has won the Ed Byrnes Memorial All-Sports Award the last five years, symbolic of the most successful sports program in the Cape-Atlantic League. A big reason for that streak was success in the fall sports.

Field hockey won another state title
This fall was no different

OCHS had a state champion in field hockey and conference champions in boys soccer, girls soccer and boys cross country.

The Raiders won their fifth straight South Jersey field hockey championship and their sixth in Cory Terry's seven years as head coach. They won their third state title in five seasons and 10th overall. Rialee Allen, who is headed to LaSalle, put together a statistical record that could qualify her as the greatest of all the Raiders. She scored 117 career goals and made 99 assists, both OCHS records.

This field hockey team (22-4) was loaded with seniors - Allen, Julia Herrington, Grace Steele, Nicholl Fenton, Britney Stein, Alexis Paone, Issy Gilhooley, Phoebe Prettyman and Megan Keenan. All were CAL all stars and all will be graduating. They will leave some large gaps in the lineup. But Terry (145-17 in seven seasons) can build around Shannon O'Reilly, who was second on the team in goals and assists; goalie Maddie Kahn, with 18 shutouts; and young players like Lainie Allegretto, Haleigh Flukey, Liz Sedberry and Reese Bloomstead.

The boys cross country team (9-0) swept to an eighth straight undefeated season, stretching its winning streak in the CAL to 79 meets. The Raiders finished second in the South Jersey Group 3 Meet for the sixth straight year. OCHS has finished either first or second in the South Jersey meet during all nine seasons under Matt Purdue (82-1).

Boys cross country has won 79 straight meets
Purdue will lose Jake Davis, who had a strong second place finish in the South Jersey Meet, Dave Millar, Evan Monteith and Ian Steele to graduation. But a strong nucleus of Jesse Schmeizer, Korey Greene, P.J. Short, Tyler James and Jon Millar should keep OCHS at the top next year.

The boys soccer team (14-4-1) shared the National Conference title with Middle Township, each handing the other its lone conference defeat. Coach Aaron Bogushefsky (102-54-13 in eight seasons) will lose Andrew Tomaino, Jim Flukey and Mike Saul to graduattion but this was a rather young team.

Four of the top six scorers on the team - Matt Brook, Luke Varallo, Hunter Paone and Josiah Nistorenko - will be back. Nistorenko also led the team in assists.

The girls soccer team (15-6) won the National Conference. Coach Kelly Halliday (47-23-2 in four seasons) will see Sadie Ford, Dara Hennessy, Julia DiPetro, Rylee McDonnell and Kasey Yunghans graduate. But talent will be returning - like Tori Rolls, who led the team in scoring a second straight year - along with Anna Devlin, Hannah Nathan, Carly Reighard and goalie Tanis McDonnell.

The girls cross country team (7-1) lost for the first time since 2010 and finished second in the CAL and third in South Jersey. Coach Trish Henry (115-7 in 14 .seasons) saw Alexa Weber lead the way. Weber finished third in South Jersey. She will be back, along with Mickey Baker, Casey McLees, Ava Auwarter and Juliette Shirk. Graduating will be Aleva Parker and Meredith Steele.

The girls tennis team (11-8) had its eighth straight winning season under Samantha DiMatteo (102-50). Singles player Patricia Abenante will graduate .along with doubles player Lexie Sharp. But singles players Libby Trofa and Maddie Holmes will be back along with doubles players Jordan Moyer, Rose Malfitano and Savannah Robertson.

The OCHS football team was 6-4, its first winning season in eight years, and just missed a return to the NJSIAA playoffs. There are more details about the football team in the story linked, below.
