Summer sports camps

School will be out soon and parents are undoubtedly looking for something to enhance the skills of their
children during the summer months.
In the old days (when Bud Rinck was a boy) kids spent time at summer camps where they would swim,
fish, weave baskets, play volleyball and live in cabins with kids their own age.
Some still enjoy that getaway but there are many other options, especially for the young athlete. Here are
some of the sports camps scheduled for this summer, for your convenience.
JUNE 20-23: Margate Baseball Camp for boys and girls aged 5-12 at Margate Little League Complex from
8:30-11:30am daily. There is another session the following week. For information phone Yogi Hiltner at

JUNE 27-JULY 1: Ocean City High School boys coach John Bruno directs the 76ers Basketball Camp for
boys and girls aged 7-13 at Ocean City High School from 9am-1pm each day. He will be joined by
representatives from the Sixers, possibly including current players. Phone 609-399-1290 for more

JUNE 27-JULY 1: The Shore Shot Basketball Camp at Cape May Tech and Middle Township Recreation
Center daily from 8am-2pm for boys and girls aged 8-15. Penn coach Fran Dunphy and St. Joseph coach

The camp returns for four more sessions throughout the summer.
JUNE 27-JULY 1: The Viking Soccer Camp will be hosted by the Ventnor Recreation Department. The
staff features Atlantic City boys coach Kevin Semet, former Holy Spirit coach Steve Miller and Timber
Creek coach Sean Ortzman, the South Jersey Coach of the Year. For more information phone

JULY 4-7: The Junior Lifeguard Camp for ages 9-15 will meet daily from 9-11:30am at Ocean City’s First
Street Beach. For information phone 609-525-9304. If you’re lucky, Brian Cunniff might make an
appearance. A second week is scheduled in August.
JULY 11-15: The Nothing But Net Basketball Camp at Richard Stockton College for boys in grades 4-8
from 9am-4pm daily. Stockton head coach Gerry Matthews and assistants Chris Crowley and Kevin

JULY 11-15: The Upper Township Hoops Camp will be held daily for girls in grades 3-8 at Upper Township
Middle School. Ocean City girls coach Paul Baruffi and youth coach Jeff Sobrinski will direct. Lower Cape
May coach Roy Wright, OCHS boys coach John Bruno and former CAL star Jessica Brookes are

JULY 11-14: Margate At The Top Basketball Camp at Margate Little League Complex for boys and girls
from 9am-12:30pm daily. There are six other sessions throughout the summer, each devoted to different

JULY 11-15: The Sandy Sticks field hockey camp will be held on the field adjacent to the Intermediate
School daily from 8:30am-noon. It is for girls aged 9-15. For information phone 609-398-9476.
JULY 11-15: Lacrosse Evolutions boys camp for ages 10-18 every day from 4-8pm at the Tennessee
Avenue complex. For information phone 610-738-6908.
JULY 18-22: The first week of the Ocean City Recreation Department’s Hoop Heaven camps, run by OCHS
Hall of Famer Stephanie Vanderslice Gaitley, the head coach at Long Island University. The camp runs
from 9am-1pm for boys and girls aged 5-18 at the Intermediate School. Phone 610-581-0319 or visit

JULY 18-22: John Bruno directs the first week of the Sea Isle City Recreation camp. This week is for girls
aged 8-13 at the JFK courts. Bruno will be joined by former high school stars Trish Hopson and Jon Evans,

JULY 18-22: The One Touch Soccer Camp holds its first week at the Eighth Street soccer field in North
Wildwood daily from 9am-3:30pm for boys and girls aged 5-16. Former high school and college stars Steve
DeHorsey and Nicole DeHorsey, both coaches at Wildwood High School, will direct. For more information,

JULY 18-22: Bill Nickles and his staff run the Ocean City Wrestling Camp at OCHS from 9am-noon each

JULY 25-29: Ocean City High School boys coach John Bruno directs the second week of the Sea Isle City
Recreation camp. This week is for boys aged 8-13 at the JFK courts. Bruno will be joined again by Hopson

JULY 25-29: The Ocean City Football Camp from 9am-1pm each day at Carey Stadium for third through

JULY 25-29: The first week of the Ocean City Barons soccer camp from 9am-noon daily at the Tennessee

JULY 25-29: The first week of the Ocean City Recreation tennis camp, this one for beginners. Richard
Stockton College coach Phil Birnbaum is the director for the 3:30-7:30pm sessions at the 18th Street

JULY 25-28: The St. Augustine Prep Wrestling Camp from 9am-3pm each day at The Prep in Richland.
Staff includes Prep coach Keith Hoover, Camden Catholic coach Gary Papa, Cinnaminson coach Jerry

AUGUST 1-5: Stephanie Gaitley joins former OCHS girls basketball coaches Pat Dougherty and Chris
Lentz at the 16th annual Raider Girls Basketball Camp. From 9am-1pm each day at Ocean City High

AUGUST 1-5: Egg Harbor Township boys basketball coach George McNally conducts his 11th annual
camp at the EHT Middle School. It is for boys from kindergarten through 10th grade from 9am-1pm daily.

AUGUST 1-5: Richard Stockton College soccer camps for players aged 5-12. Younger players go from
9am-noon, older players from 9am-3pm. Directed by Stockton mens coach Jeff Haines with womens
coach Nick Juengert and Haddon Heights coach Jeff Eppright. Stockton also has residential camps

AUGUST 1-5: The second week of the Ocean City Recreation tennis camp, this one for more advanced
players. Birnbaum is also the director for the 3:30-7:30pm sessions at the 18th Street courts, behind the

AUGUST 15-19: Gaitley returns for a fourth and final week from 9am-1pm for girls and boys aged 5-18 at

Many of these camps will require a birth certificate to register.
These are just some of the camps that can sharpen the skills of your young athlete this summer.
