Local duo named top NJ sportscaster & sportswriter Two local journalists have been named the best sportscaster and sportswriter in New Jersey for 2016 by the members of the National Sports Media Association (formerly known as the National Sportscasters & Sportswriters Association). Tom Williams of Prime Events and Mike McGarry of the Press of Atlantic City, were announced as the Garden State's winners Wednesday afternoon.
McGarry, who covers high schools and the Phillies for The Press of Atlantic City, is a winner for the second time. He also won the award in 2010. Other finalists for the sportscaster award were Mike Gill, host of the Sports Bash on 97.3-ESPN; Mike Frankel, sports anchor at SNJ Today; and Chris Carlin of the Rutgers IMG Sports Network. Finalist for the sportswriter award were Dave Weinberg, a columnist who also covers the Eagles for the Press of Atlantic City; and Steve Politi of NJ.com. The 2016 National Sportscaster of the Year is the retired voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Vin Scully. The National Sportswriter award went to Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated. Merrill Reese of the Eagles Radio Network was named Pennsylvania Sportscaster of the Year and Bob Cooney of the Philadelphia Daily News was named PA's top sportswriter. Selected for induction to the NSMA Hall of Fame were the late Frank Gifford and ESPN's Linda Cohn as sportscasters and Baltimore's Sam Lacy and Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News as the sportswriters.
