Mia Dougherty of Wildwood Catholic Academy is the 2024 winner
Mia (accepting the award from Mike Gatley) was a sprinter in track and captain of the Wildwood Catholic cheerleaders.
She organized and created bags of essential products for the homeless as part of Branches Outreach.
She was a field day coordinator for the Boys & Girls Club, a four-year representative on the WCA Student Council
and mentored young special needs girls in the Precious Gem Pageant.
Mia Worked for more than three years at the Food Pantry in Wildwood Crest, was a Youth Council member with American Red Cross
and aas an ambassador for National Society of High School Scholars.
She was an essay scholarship award winner and finished first as a dance soloist during an Atlantic City competition.
In fact, dance has been a big part of her life and that brings us to one final accomplishment.
While riding her bike 4 years ago she was hit by a car driven by a driver who was texting. She suffered a broken leg and was told she couldn’t dance
for at least a year and might not ever dance at the same level.
But she came all the way back, restoring her dancing skills.
Then she did more – she made something good out of something bad.
She created "X-the-Text" and has spoken at many area schools to encourage an end to distracted driving.
She has also become active with EndDD.org, done segments on 98.7-The Coast, a local radio station, to discourage distracted driving
and received an award from the U.S. House of Representatives for her efforts.
She plans to attend Florida Atlantic University and eventually work in the medical field..
